The Elk Rut
- Rocky Mountains Most Exciting Event
“The Rut”
September - October
Rocky Mountain National Park
Estes Park, CO
Every fall, bull elk put on a dramatic show of dominance, bugling across the valleys, herding their harems, and sometimes even clashing antlers. Join me for a front-row seat to one of the most powerful wildlife spectacles in North America.
Each fall, something primal stirs in the mountain valleys. Bull elk begin to bugle, their haunting calls echoing through the cool morning air as they compete for dominance, gather their harems, and prepare for battle. This is the Elk Rut—a wild and unforgettable experience—and this tour is designed to put you in the perfect place to witness it all.
We’ll head out during peak activity times, usually around sunrise or sunset, when the elk are most vocal and visible. With years of experience navigating this season and knowing where the animals tend to gather, I’ll guide you to the best spots for both safe, respectful viewing and incredible photography opportunities. You’ll not only witness the action, but learn about elk behavior, mating rituals, and conservation efforts that protect these iconic animals. We’ll use long lenses, patience, and timing to capture raw moments of nature in action—all while immersed in the colors, sounds, and cool mountain air of autumn in the Rockies. Bring your camera, your curiosity, and a jacket—it’s going to be wild.
